Keith is right - if you transpose the example in snapshot.png up an octave,  
you'll get the close spacing.  The spacing is purely a consequence of rote  
padding added to LilyPond for things close to the staff.  I agree that the  
example looks better spaced out, but this spacing can be re-achieved, as  
Keith suggests, via the same techniques used to space lyric contexts (which  
would/should be the subject of a separate patch) or by adding  
extra-spacing-width.
