1. What version of LilyPond are you using
2. on which operating system?
(3. Are you familiar with command-line usage? That might be another way 
to test.)
(4. Perhaps you might want to try Frescobaldi, it offers a great 
interface for using LilyPond: <http://frescobaldi.org>.)
