Did you look at the error message this produces?

warning: cannot find Voice `tab'

\new Lyrics {
             \lyricsto "tab" { Here are the words } }

A good hint that lyrics work with voices:

\new TabStaff { \new TabVoice = tab { \relative c'' { \tune } } }
