Thanks for the suggestion.  However, the attached patch was debian
specific, so it should either be changed to be generic to all systems, or
be applied only to debian's port of m4 (and not upstream).

This has been done on m4 CVS head, which uses automake.  Unfortunately, m4
2.0 won't be released until libtool 2.0, so it will likely be a while
before you see an m4 release with an install-strip make target.
