Sorry for the long delay in replying; the web forum has not been as actively
followed as the address@hidden mailing list.

Do you still have problems with m4-1.4.4?  If so, I think it will be solved
by moving to automake for the upcoming m4-1.4.5.  Automake provides the
'missing' script so that calling 'make' on the tarball works just fine if you
don't have makeinfo but also didn't modify m4.texinfo.

As for messages from configure, it is not an error if we cause compiler error
messages when discovering limitations of your system; it is only an error if
the configure script guesses wrong.  m4 is built to work around systems
lacking SA_ONSTACK, for example.
