make check failure on m4-1.4.11.tar.gz

Sir/Madam:

 

In the process of trying to upgrade the version of m4 that we are running:

 

1. I

   a. downloaded m4-1.4.11.tar.gz;

   b. unpacked it with 'tar xzf m4-1.4.11.tar.gz';

   c. ran ./configure;

   d. ran make;

   e. ran make check

   f. got an error message saying that I should report the results to you.

 

2. configuration is

   a. uname -a == Linux svrx2309 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 17:52:56 EDT 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

3. the results of running "rm -f results.out; (make clean; ./configure; make; make check) | tee results.out" is attached.

 

This is an old system that we obviously have avoided updating, primarily for lack of a Linux sys admin.

 

Our ultimate goal here was to update to Subversion 1.5.1, which required (at least, so far) an update of bdb and autoconf and m4.
