Hello Aaron,

Thanks for the report.  You didn't mention which version (including the
output of 'm4 --version' would have been helpful), but...

Thanks for the reply. GnuWin32.sf.net says version 1.4.12. M4 will not even give a version  number, so its probably something trivial.

...this message is only printed by 1.4.12.  Did you build this yourself,
or are you using it pre-compiled from the gnuwin32 folks?  They have

Its from GNUWin32.

typically not had the best track record for reliable ports (although the
fact that you appear to be using 1.4.12 means that they at least have
modernized things recently).  You may also want to try mingw or cygwin, if
you like using precompiled ports.

I personally don't have access to a Vista machine, so I can't reproduce
the error.  To get to the bottom of this, we need to know whether this
happens for every invocation, regardless of the command line, or whether

Yes.

it is a particular input sequence that triggers the failure (and if so,
can you please send us the input files).  If you built m4 yourself, the
next step would be attaching a debugger and getting a stack trace at the
point where the abort occurs; if you are using it precompiled, then you
may be better off asking the gnuwin32 people who compiled it to look into
the issue.  It may also be that the crash is occurring inside code added
or modified by the gnuwin32 people, rather than in the pristine m4 package
(although the GPL requires that they publish any modifications alongside
their binary, so a link to where you downloaded from might be useful).

Okay I will report it to the GnuWin32 crew otherwise I'll try building it myself when I get some time.

Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!

Thanks :)
