Oops, that's right for automake 1.5. Automake 1.4 always adds -I. -I$(srcdir)
to DEFS (right at the start of comp-vars.am)

I have already done this, thanks. I have also made a couple of changes to
mh/Makefile.am to make it build with 1.5 without warnings (automake
complained about ALL_LDADD variable).
It seems we should get in synch about which version of auto{make|conf} we are
using, shouldn't we? Maybe we should also write a line about it in README-alpha?
