Nice function.  Congratulations!  I hope that "mail" will someday be able 
to process UTF-8 headers and names without additional hassle.

Allow me to draw your attention to the fact that the reply from the
server was not implying that the problem was in email *addresses*.
On the contrary, it said:

  553-The recipient's mail server does not support E-mail
  553-messages with international Unicode E-mail addresses or
  553-E-mail messages in the international Unicode E-mail format.

Note the 'or' clause: in other words, it was trying to tell you that
it is unable to process mails formatted as per RFC 6532[1].
