Chinese with text dialog?

Have a project g4l that does disk imaging, and it uses dialog with 
a text terminal. Have just had a request from user if it is possible 
to allow for chinese? 

Was able to copy come chinese characters from a web site, and 
was able to have xdialog and dialog to display the character using 
textbox option, but when I switch to another virtual window, the 
same textbox displays square boxes and spaces. So, I know 
dialog can display the chinese, but something isn't available in the 
regular text screen or with my g4l. 

Also, don' t know what would be required to enter text or just look 
at the file names.

Program text is all in English, so not a major issue, though I have 
though of trying to make other languages...
