I just compiled and ran it. Of course, I'm on Debian Testing, so all
the various pieces (libc, ncurses, terminal emulator, font rendering,
font files) are pretty up-to-date and (more importantly) in agreement.
I wouldn't be surprised by the behaviour you saw on an older system, or
one that was using a mixture of newer and older components.
