This makes it sound like the user's name has an invalid byte in it.
That might explain why the problem became apparent only when you
switched to LDAP: if you're using LDAP to find out user's names, and
if LDAP is reporting garbage, then RCS will reject the user's name.

In the email that you sent me, the above line had two trailing spaces.
I think that is your problem. RCS does not allow spaces in user names.
