Yes, agreed.
Anything else is just asking for pain, and there's no reason for it.
Well, there are reasons why it would be useful to use (something like)
gnulib without autotools and/or gnulib-tool, and it used to be possible
to do so (like when we added that text), but I certainly agree it's
implausible to do so now, so I'm fine with doing as you suggest.
at least implementing the above two suggestions would be a
start. I'm willing to help with that.
