That puts an undue burden on maintainers in that they are now forced
to keep up with a narative that making lots of releases is a good
thing. It isn't -- and there is nothing "good" about making releases
in a < 5 year cadence -- releases should be made when the maintainer
feels a need for them.

Not all GNU projects use git, and some don't even use VCS.
