[[[ To any NSA and FBI agents reading my email: please consider ]]]
[[[ whether defending the US Constitution against all enemies, ]]]
[[[ foreign or domestic, requires you to follow Snowden's example. ]]]

This proposed change would mean a decrease in retrocompatibility,
Thus, inherently it is a change for the worse.
The reason I think we should do it is to avoid problems with
non-GNU compilers that have already broken that retrocompatibility.

In effect, the change would be a way of ceding to pressure for current
compatibility with non-GNU programs that have broken retrocmpatibility.

This change seems to be necessary, and that is the question I'm asking
for advice about.

However, if it is necessary, it is regrettable that other changes have
occurred which made it necessary.
