We are using FreeBSD 4.5 which comes with tar version 1.11.2. Our disks
area formatted with a blocksize of 8192 bytes. Our disk partitions are
either 500 gigabytes or 1 terabyte in size.
We are able to create tar files in excess of 100 gigabytes in size.
However, if any individual file in the archive is 2 gigabytes or more in
size, when extracting it from the archive, the size is reported as 0
bytes (or in negative numbers) and the file is corrupt.
I have tried using tar version 1.13.25 under FreeBSD 4.5 and was able to
make the archive including an 4 gigabyte file but got an error while
extracting which was not readable as loads of garbage was printed
filling the screen.
I have not found a clear reference to this anywhere yet, so apologies if
this a repeat.
Thanks
Francois
