As someone who hacked makeinfo's macro code quite a bit, I think that
way lies madness. The macro-expansion code is already overloaded with
lots of hidden assumptions, like when to expand and when not to expand
them in recursive macros, depending on whether we are under -E or not,
under --iftex or not, etc. Adding yet another subtly different macro
construct would be a lot of effort for relatively small benefits.
