The contents of "tests/ii-0041-test.log" could be useful.

I'd expect this is an error message from gzip when it is being run to
read in the dir file into install-info, however there's a chance it is
an error from zdiff.

Maybe you could try commenting out the "rm -f $tempfile
$outputdirfile" line, and check afterwards whether the $outputdirfile
file actually existed at the end.
