Seeing that there are now a bunch of active contributors who send in patches, 
perhaps one or more of these should rather be given commit access so that they 
can get stuff merged without going through a single person?

It really doesn't matter who the single person is, he/she is likely to remain 
a bottle neck as long as he/she is "the single person".
