Thanks for pointing this out, Tony.
I guess with 'work from the distribution' you are talking about a tarball
(created by 'make dist').
Yes, we should take care that 'make dist' generates a ChangeLog from a
changelog history (e.g. read-only ChangeLog.history) and the git log.
There are scripts / tools out there that do the job (maybe have to be slightly
amended). Giuseppe mentioned 'gitlog-to-changelog'.
