Hmmm, I am not an install expert (never use it), but it looks you are right.

Maybe you can test the latest 'git clone' ?
A bunch of things have been fixed since the release.

Aha. Side remark: README.checkout tells one to run bootstrap.sh.
There is no such file. But there is bootstrap.
