FYI: for AIX - especially when not using gcc (which I try to never do) the latest and greatest gnulib nearly always fails. FYI: this was a cause for failure for gettext versions after 0.18.1.1 until it had been repaired in the embedded gnulib in version 0.19.4. It is such a pity that gnulib does not do "versioning" or "distributions". C'est la vie. Shall try my other debian (on POWER) distribution, and see if that proceeds further.

I hope you understand better why I did not try and ./bootstrap on AIX - as well as why I work from distros, rather "the latest". In general, way too much instability and untracked changes (outside the main project - as I expect you do have complete tracking of what is happening within wget) This is something a formal colleague taught me in 1990 - in "do not use * for packaging, list the files so you know when something comes, or goes", aka wildcards are just "issues" waiting to happen...
Ah - I must record this: as the "Linux" world has "always (implied)" said: we update without reboot... :)

Anyway, after all this, I do not think downloading and bootstraping wget is a path for me. If it does not work on two debian distros I am not going to risk the bootstrap on AIX.
