[Bug-XBoard] Two bug reports

I received two bug reports on forums, which I am not sure how to fix:

One ( http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=52035 ) is on Mac,
where 4.6.0 produces a stream of spurious run-time warnings:
Warning: No type converter registered for '(null)' to 'FontSet' conversion.
and then uses another font then Helvetica.

The other I received as a PM, reproduced below. I am not even sure this is
an XBoard problem. I have heard people complaining about Unity and Ubuntu
11.04 / 11.10 display handling in general; I am also in e-mail contact with
someone who experiences a 20-sec startup delay in 4.5.x which he does
not have with 4.2.7 (but in the mean time he established it also happens
in 4.4.3). Despite that he already turned away from Unity. When he runs
the same binary on other Linux distributions, there is no such delay.

Hi H.G.

Over the last few weeks I've been noticing some odd behavior with the Ubuntu
11.10 xboard package (4.5.2) running under the default Unity desktop. I've been
experiencing a lot of strange drawing issues, anywhere from menu hiccups (the
reverse-video mouseover fails to erase completely when mousing over a new menu
items) to pieces disappearing completely from the board. My guess is that this
is a Unity/compiz issue, but the previous combination of xboard 4.4.4 and Ubuntu
11.04 (w/ Unity) worked perfectly.

I can reproduce the menu drawing issue on two different computers, but the piece
disappearing act seems to happen at random. Here's an example from a recent
1 0 game (I was played white):

[d]r1bq1rk1/pp1nnppp/3p4/3Np3/4P3/5N2/PPP2PPP/R2Q1RK1 b

In this position black played Nxd5 after which following position was displayed
on the board:

[d]r1bq1rk1/pp1n1ppp/3p4/3Np3/4P3/5N2/PPP2PPP/R2Q1RK1 w

Notice how the knight on d5 is still white. I eventually replied Qxd5 which
xboard accepted and the game progressed uneventfully. Being 1 0, I didn't have
time to snap a screenshot, but I did try to refocus the window and even dragged
another window over xboard to force a damage update, but the knight on d5 was
still displayed as a white knight.

Not sure if this is xboard issue, a Unity issue, or a combination of the two. I just thought
I'd bring it to your attention.
