If input notation can be localized at some point in the future, as I think it should, then the first character of a move will not necessary be a ASCII letter (A-Z) or number.

You mean it can be a code >127?

Then we shouldonly exclude the keys we want to use for binding.
'.' could be an unlucky choice, however: besies poppig up the move type-in,
a key hit when the board has focus now also pops up the ICS input box in ICS mode.
And ICS commands can very frequently start with '.' (= tell to same).

I think we should use a single key, but better not '.'
How about <Enter>? This has no binding, and is unshifted in any language.
