Sure. 'Recommends' doesn't imply it would be automatically installed when
you install the xboard package, but it is better than nothing.

But you don't have to convince us. The distro maintainers create the
packages, and decide about the dependencies. This is not a process
controlled by the upstream source.

Perhaps we should alter the error-popup text if XBoard doesn't manage to
start an 'engine' that is in fact a (known) protocol adapter (i.e. invoked
through the -fUCI or -fUSI options), to point out to the user that he has
to install the corresponding adapter.
