I'm not sure where the automake warning would have appeared. My email contained the full output text from autogen.sh.
Wouldn't it be funny if AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(1.8.3) is not backwards compatible with Automake 1.7, thereby defeating the purpose to which it is put? It does seem that I'm using a newer form of argument passing, and that there's an older depreciated form. I'm not interested in chasing down Automake problems any more thoroughly than to note how much it sucks. I do know that it was sufficient for distinghishing 1.8.x and onwards.
I have built CMake using the Linux bootstrap process, and it built chicken without any problems.
Cool! So I'll just be saying "use CMake" early and often when there's an Automake problem. Maybe we can accumulate enough Automake bugs to junk the whole thing. :-)
