Thanks for this.  Perhaps it's just a newbie build issue.

I nuked my old subversion copy and checked a new copy out for a new
build, and built chicken in another directory as you suggested. The
same results.

However, the application launches okay if I add /usr/local/lib to
LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

So at least I have a workaround.
