You can also incorporate them directly into the regex using the syntaxes
"(?i)", "(?m)", "(?s)", and "(?x)".

Thanks. That does exactly what I want.  So for instance a regular
expression preceded by "(?s)" causes end-of-line to be counted as a
regular character by the "." operator.
