Actually, wasn't referring to those tarballs, rather the tarball provided by 
git at  "chicken-core.git".  With each commit listed, there's a "snapshot" url. 
  Basically, it fetches a tarball of the current tree with all the commits up 
to that point--at least that's what I understood. 

In this case it was commit "dfbde3ebfe2afcc20a84e71c220c396a976ce60c" as of 
"Tue, 26 Jul 2011 01:54:39 +0000 (03:54 +0200)".   Seems to be the most 
convenient way to get the latest code without having to clone a repository, etc.
