IIRC, it was just a hack for overriding the installation prefix, among other
crude methods (CHICKEN_PREFIX, or CHICKEN_INSTALL_PREFIX, or whatever,
I lost track...).
It should go, IMHO. No prefix-overriding at all should be allowed.
