PS: I'm not sure if this should go into 5.4 or 6.0.  On the one hand,
it's a relatively minor addition to the API.  On the other hand, if
anyone wants to rely on it we might need to provide a feature for it
whereas in 6.0 it would be trivial.

Do we even want to make a 5.4 release at all?
