Well I didn't see that in the wiki and by default lui-fill-column is
hard-coded to 70 (see circe.el). 

And certainly it's so that the default configuration for circe assumes a
window of width lui-fill-column.

But this is certainly a cleaner approach, so thanks for pointing this
out.
