Hmpf, all my attempts either did not work or ended up being too baroque
and brittle to be worth of real consideration. I now think your original
proposed change is better. Maybe, as a follow-up, we might move the
distributed manpages in a subdirectory in 'man/', and copy them over
back in 'man/' when the system lacks a perl interpreter and thus cannot
run help2man on the freshly-built executables. But as I said, that's
for a follow-up (if it is done at all).
