In response,
Your 1st idea of m3u lists is just a bit cumbersome.  It's not for quickly setting up an audio player to do.  m3u's are fine if you determine ahead of time what to listen to.

I really like the 2nd idea, but having to reload the .m3u everytime I want to change my filter again is a bit much too.

The 3rd idea pretty much hits the nail on the head.  Maybe it could also "temporarily" move those tagged files into the top and shuffle other files down and out of view?  Then you would also need a command to turn off search.  (I like the whole 'f' for filter thing a whole lot better though.)

To elaborate on my idea, here's my story.  Most of the time when I'm working at my PC, I find myself doing something like programming and listening to music.  If I think to myself, "I'm sick of Coldplay, I want some Cake!"  Ideally, I would go to my playlist, hit "x" (arbitrary, and i was thinking it would popup the same place you type to search something) which would load a filter input where i type "cake" and the playlist (and/or possibly file manager) would show only files with cake in the name or path.  The path is important so I can do "rock" and it grabs my music in "./Music/Rock/Arist - Album".  Follow me on this?

P.S.  I already forwarded it ;)

Hello,

Thanks for your kind feedback. Unfortunately I have not been
programming at all lately, but every now and then I receive an
email that gives me the inspiration to continue.

I agree that described functionality would be useful, however, the
same thing could be accomplished if m3u-files and such were treated as
directories in the playlist. Then you could use the recursive search
function to add "filtered" songs to the playlists. Would this work for
you, or does your proposed filter function do something that cannot be
done this way?

As you might be aware of, another way of doing something similar in
current cplay would be to say: "Tcoldplay\nid" in the playlist
containing all your music. That is, tag every line containing
"coldplay", invert tags and delete. The downside of this, of course,
is that in order to remove your "filter" you would have to add your
playlist again. I presume that your proposed filter function would
remeber the original playlist if you redefine the filter?

A third possibility would be to introduce a playlist mode that only
plays tagged files.

IMO, the above alternatives would be more flexible than a filter since
you could effectively combine several "filters", but flexibility often
comes with a price.

Anyway, if a filter function is added to cplay I would like this to be
meaningful for both the filelist and the playlist - with different
filters of course.

Can I forward this mail to address@hidden ?

ulf

| Hello,
| Just wanted to say cplay is a great application. I use it over ssh
| religiously. The one thing I was hoping for was a filter. I tend to
| load allMusicFiles.m3u and i was hoping that there would be an easy
| way to get the playlist to play, for example, all files by 'coldplay'
| where i would type cold and the filter would adapt the playlist as I
| type.
|
| The feature is in the Amarok playlist and I was thinking it would make
| a great addition to cplay.
|
| I hope you're still happily coding cplay as it's great!
