I tried "rm config.cache; env CC=cc CXX=cxx ./configure", but that made
configure no longer work.

The version of gcc I'm using is installed in a public folder that is used by
dozens of people, so I think it's O.K., but I'll check it out again with the
network admin. Any other suggestions?

I built succesfully ddd on alfa/osf using Compaq compilers with
"rm config.cache; env CC=cc CXX=cxx ./configure"
A much easier route IMO.

It looks as if gcc is not properly installed. Furthermore, using gcc 2.95.3
would be safer.
