After I patched plain 3.3.9-test2 sources with the patch you provided 
HPUX 10.20 compilation went like a charm:

Because I am already late to where I am going I just added Makefile, 
config.log and output from compilation and "check" phases to this email 
so that you may check if there is anything starange.

HPUX 11.00 situation is such that our IM just yesterday upgraded 
compiler version (aCC) from 3.37 to 3.55 and there were some compilation 
problems now to compile the patched 3.3.9-test2. I'll return to this 
isue tomorrow.
