IIRC the slapd.conf was there at one time. Somehow during the apt-get 
install sourceforge it got deleted.

No. But I will. I was hoping to avoid trying to hack dpkg install scripts. 
It would take me a long time to try and figure out what they are trying to 
do and then to fix it (if I can).
