Next week is GRCon, and prior to the conference we would like to share some exciting news. We are partnering with The SETI Institute to collaborate and further our joint goals in open & accessible research, education, and technology development with software radio. We first started working with The SETI Institute and some of their UC Berkeley faculty a couple of years ago, and since then have coordinated a number of successful events and co-developments.
Specifically, what this partnership means for GNU Radio is that The SETI Institute will assume back-office responsibilities for the project and provide operational support - such as accounting and infrastructure. GNU Radio maintains its own leadership and administration duties and will appoint a Principal Investigator to directly represent the project inside the SETI Institute.. Through our partnership, we expect to pursue new funding opportunities for both the SETI Institute and GNU Radio, and continue to expand the impact of GNU Radio's free software approach to research & education.
In GNU Radio's 19-year history, we've been through several different iterations of organizational support for the project and community. As most projects do, GNU Radio started out supported through the private companies / consultancies of the core developers working on it. Eventually, we founded the GNU Radio Foundation, and several years later migrated to the Free Software Foundation. Our partnership with the SETI Institute reflects our continued growth and success, and will provide the support we need to continue on that trajectory for years to come.
The Free Software Foundation has expressed its support and excitement for this partnership, and is working closely with GNU Radio and SETI Institute leadership to make the back-office transition smooth.
