The location for the defaults databases(!) is in ~/Library/Preferences.
Each default domain is archived in a file named like the bundle
identifier of the application, i.e. com.apple.windowserver.plist. As
the name indicates, these are property lists (the XML variant).
I don't know the whereabouts of the NSGlobalDomain archive, though.
This is not in ~/Library/Preferences, ~/.MacOSX, /Library/Caches. Maybe
someone else knows where it is.
