Ok, let me start with a bit of context...
Microsoft has launched an ambitious initiative called .NET
which seems to have two major goals :
a) Microsoft would like to gain market dominance in the markets
for internet server software and "web services". If Microsoft
succeeds with this, they can then make proprietary extensions
to the important protocols that are used on the internet, etc.
b) Currently business-to-consumer ecommerce relies on the
customer entering authentication information (i.e. a username
and password) or personal information (at least name and
address) and a credit card number into web-based forms.
Microsoft would like all this information to be stored
centrally in a cluster of "Passport" servers operated by
Microsoft.
