In many cases, they don't have much choice.  Uni's
around the world are hurting for cash because of drops
in government-funded grants.  This forces them into
the arms of companies like Microsoft, who can easily
put the squeeze on them.  "Sign this NDA or you don't
get the cash".

This situation (corporate funding stand-over tactics)
is going to continue until governments start funding
universities again, or enact regulations that enforce
separation between funding and academic integrity.
Don't hold your breath.
