[DotGNU]help with sockets

I developed a windows service that uses sockets ( streaming ) to automate ftp 
connections.

it works fine with internal ip addresses, but tends to hang with external 
sites.

these sites can be easily connected to, and make file transfers with dos ftp.

i played around with the receive timeout parameter but did not work.

how can i 'wrap' my socket to make it more robust ?
