Is /home a symlink perhaps? If so you're asking duplicity to backup a
single symlink in the former case, while in the latter case you'll be
asking to backup your actual home directory.
(Not that I know off hand that duplicity is supposed to handle a
non-directory to begin with, but the above seems like a likely
senario).
