Mac OS X is generally the same for ownership. But why should I need to be root to backup my files? Why is it changing the ownership of these files? At the moment the ownership is by me sth:staff and duplicity is running as me (sth). It appears that it is trying to change the ownership from sth:staff to sth:staff which is not really necessary?

Chown (changing ownership) of mentioned file failed. I dont know how it works on macos, but on linux you need to be a root to do it. Scott Hannahs < address@hidden> wrote:
Folks,
I have a backup script that runs unattended every night. It backs up 3 directories using rsync and a temp directory on the local machine. I have been getting an error for the last week or so that keeps two of the directories from backing up. It is an "Operation not permitted" error but it is not clear to me what operation is not being permitted by whom.
