Yes, it is a difficult problem, because to split equation in partial
blocks with nowrap would require to parse the mathematical sense of
the equation (e.g. plus sign can be break point in base line, but not
inside fraction denominator). Anyway, inlined equations tend to 
be shorter and moving the complete equation to next line is not too bad.
Longer equations look better in display mode and usually the 
author write them breaking by hand (or with align environments, etc).

Yes, your solution inside "span.formula" works well for inlined
formula.
