After considering it again, I would also vote for the d) option
by Axel, like the bottom in http://ds9a.nl/docbook/fancy-css.html

My comments in previous message, about consistency in the character
after section numbering in all cases, already hold.

That way, when not using --notoclabels, the section type labels
could be separated in all cases (nav, toc, contents) with a colon
"Section: 5.2 How Not To Make Enemies", etc.
