... but detecting images in magic-mode-alist was done because someone requested having .JPG images without the extension (thumbnails for .MPG videos, I think) auto-detected by Emacs. This is worthwhile. Whether it should be default or not is another issue
It was me that mentioned that I liked that Emacs recognized that a .thm file (in my case) was actually a JPEG file, and that I found that conventient. I did not think about the security implications. I would still find it convenient if there was a confirmation (as per the different suggestions where the file extension does not seem to match the file format).
