It does, now:

  list-buffers-directory is a variable defined in `menu-bar.el'.
  Its value is nil

    Automatically becomes buffer-local when set in any fashion.

  Documentation:
  String to display in buffer listings for buffers not visiting a file.
  Dired, shell and other modes use this variable.

and, though the docstring is brand new, the variable was already
documented in the Emacs Lisp Reference (node 27.4 "Buffer File Name").
