There are a lot of things one might want to display in the margin at
the same time.
* Line numbers
* Modification marker bars
* Collapse/expand markers/buttons
* Bookmarks
* Debugger breakpoints and/or current statement arrow
* (in a git blame) Username and/or commit ID and/or date
These are mostly independent and it may make sense to isolate modes
from each other with respect to margin width.
