On master, I have recently disabled history expasion in eshell by
default. I personally consider history expansion pretty much obsolete
in the face of interactive history commands like M-r
(eshell-previous-matching-input) and being able to just edit previous
command lines directly with all of Emacs' editing power available.
Similarly, I disable history expansion in bash, and just use readline
editing facilities instead.
But, at least one person disagrees with this (see Bug#29821), so I
hope emacs-devel members might give a few more opinions on the matter.
